The İstanbul 17th High Criminal Court dismissed the lawsuit for damages filed by journalist Deniz Yücel, who was detained and arrested while he was working as the İstanbul correspondent of Germany’s Die Welt newspaper and imprisoned for a year. Held behind bars for nearly a year from February 27, 2017 to February 16, 2018, Yücel previously sent a petition via his attorney Veysel Ok to the İstanbul 32nd High Criminal Court, where he was standing trial, and filed a lawsuit. Yücel demanded 2 million 980 Turkish Lira (TRY) in damages for the period when he had been unlawfully arrested. In his statement taken via the relevant authorities in Germany, Yücel said that he had been tortured in prison (June 10).
