Put on trial at the Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court on the grounds that he had allegedly “propagandized for a terrorist organization” on social media with a number indicated to be closed in the GSM company’s records and arrested for 55 days in Diyarbakır Prison in 2016, journalist Metin Bekiroğlu decided to file a suit for damages into the trial that caused him to lose his job after he was acquitted. Bekiroğlu said, “This is an open indication of how evidence is fabricated to arrest and intimidate the citizens living in the region. It is also a proof of what kind of hardships the ones doing journalism in the region, where aggrievements occur, are faced with” (January 15).
