Journalist Altan Sancar faces trial over a social media post about the Republican People’s Party (CHP) 38th Ordinary Congress held on 4–5 November 2023. In his post, Sancar wrote, “There are rumors about a trustee being appointed to the CHP.” The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office charged him under Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code for “publicly disseminating misleading information,” seeking up to three years in prison. The case will be heard by the Ankara 27th Criminal Court of First Instance. Sancar stated, “I stand by the information I shared. I will not take a step back,” adding, “I know the meaning of the case being filed before 30 June, and also why Fatih Altaylı was arrested.”
