Gençağa Karafazlı, a journalist and the Chairperson of the Eastern Black Sea Branch of the Progressive Journalists Association (ÇGD), was taken into custody on 22 July 2025 over a news report alleging that Rize Provincial Director of National Education Halil İbrahim Akmeşe had renovated his office and built a private toilet for himself. He was detained along with journalist Şenol Öksüz. Both journalists gave their statements to the prosecutor and were released afterwards.
