The indictment was prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on the allegation that journalist Zafer Arapkirli insulted Nurettin Yıldız on social media. Zafer Arapkirli has faced up to 2 years and 4 months of imprisonment for “insult”.

The 32nd Criminal Court of First Instance of İstanbul acquitted journalist Zafer Arapkirli, who was on trial for “insult” because of his reaction to Nurettin Yıldız who has said that “6-year-old child can get married”.

With his ruling of acquittal reversed by the appeals court in 2019, journalist Zafer Arapkirli appeared before the judge again on charge of “insult”.

At the hearing held on January 31, 2023, Arapkirli’s lawyers requested that the hearing be held at a larger courtroom in line with the right to a fair trial. The court accepted the request. The next hearing will be held on May 3 (January 3).

In the final hearing of the trial held on November 29, the court ruled that there was no need to sentence Arapkirli since it was understood that the crime of “insult” was committed in response to an unjust act (November 29).
