Abdullah Kaya, Ağrı correspondent for the Dicle News Agency (DİHA) which was shut down by order of a decree law, was arrested on December 24, 2017, after his sentence of four years and two months in prison on the charges of “knowingly aiding and abetting a terrorist organization whilst not being a member” were approved by the court. He is currently convicted and sentenced to 4 years and 2 months imprisonment.

He demanded his acquittal but the hearing is adjourned until 13 May (7 Februrary).

Kaya was imprisoned due to another case. Upon the amendment of law regulating press offenses, he was released on October 30.

Kaya attended the eighth hearing on February 13, 2020 at the Ağrı 2nd High Criminal Court with his lawyer. The court decided to hear the defendant who did not attend the hearing and adjourned the hearing until May 13 (13 February).

The hearing scheduled to be held on May 13 was postponed to October 20 due to measures imposed against coronavirus pandemic.

At the hearing held on October 20, 2020, the court has ruled that the social media posts presented as evidence in the indictment shall be examined by an export and the digital materials seized during detention shall be returned. The next hearing will be held on March 4, 2021 (October 20).

Abdullah Kaya attended the hearing on March 4 and said that he would not make defense in the absence of his attorney. The next hearing of the case will be held on July 1, 2021 (March 4).

In the trial where former Dicle News Agency (DİHA) reporter Abdullah Kaya stood trial for “membership of a terrorist organization” and “propagandizing for a terrorist organization,” the hearing scheduled for July 1 was adjourned until a later date as the court board caught coronavirus (July 1).

At the hearing held on January 20, 2022, the court ruled that the Court of Cassation’s reply to the written correspondence regarding the arrest of Kaya should be awaited. The next hearing will be held on April 19 (January 20).

On September 6, 2022, journalist Kaya and his lawyers did not attend the hearing by offering an excuse. At the hearing held on the file, the prosecutor’s office requested that the deficiencies be rectified. The next hearing will be held on November 15 (September 6).
