At its weekly meeting on September 8, 2021, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) decided to impose three separate administrative fines on Tele 1 TV channel on the grounds of Merdan Yanardağ’s remarks about the RTÜK on “4 Soru 4 Cevap” (4 Questions 4 Answers) program; his use of “discriminatory remarks” in another part of the same program and “insults against the government, sports community and TRT”.

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) had announced that TELE1 would face a five-day broadcast suspension starting on 6 August, instructing the channel to halt its broadcast at midnight between 6 and 7 August. However, on 5 August, the 23rd Administrative Court of Ankara suspended the execution of RTÜK’s sanction in response to a lawsuit filed by TELE1. The court ruled that since the broadcast suspension “would be irreversible once implemented,” the execution of the sanction should be halted without waiting for the administration’s defense or interim response.
