In the court case heard by the İstanbul Anadolu 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance, journalist Ahmet Altan is standing trial for allegedly insulting the then Court of Cassation President Abdurrahman Yalçınkaya with his column article “Preparation for a coup or shutting down Kemalism” published on Taraf newspaper in 2008.

After the court of appeals upheld the sentence given by the İstanbul Anadolu 32nd Criminal Court of First Instance in another trial on charge of “insulting the President of the Republic” in March 2018, this case file where the prosecution was previously suspended was opened again 10 years later.

On February 18, 2021, at the 4th hearing of the court case where Ahmet Altan is standing trial on charge of “insulting a public officer” at the İstanbul Anadolu 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance, the court board ruled that a writ should be issued to ask whether the file returned from the Court of Cassation. The next hearing will be held on June 8 (February 18).
