On July 2nd, 2019 the verdict was rendered in the case where Aslı Ceren Aslan was tried for allegedly propagandizing for a terrorist organization.

The journalist was sentenced to 3 years 9 months of imprisonment for propagandizing for a terrorist organization, due to 16 issues of Özgür Gelecek Newspaper between March – June 2016. She was also sentenced to 3 years 1 months 15 days of imprisonment for the same offense, due to October and November 2016 issues of the same newspaper and two separate social media posts.

In total the journalist was sentenced to 6 years 10 months 15 days of imprisonment.

Aslı Ceren Aslan was released from the prison in August 2019.

The 3rd Chamber of Istanbul Regional Court of Appeals has upheld a combined prison sentence of 6 years and 9 months given to journalist Aslı Ceren Aslan on July 8, 2020. Aslan’s lawyer will appeal the verdict (8 July).
