President Erdoğan’s son-in-law Selçuk Bayraktar and his company Baykar Makina filed a lawsuit against BirGün newspaper and its reporter İsmail Arı for a total of 2 million TL. BirGün Chairman İbrahim Aydın said, “The sole purpose of such a compensation lawsuit is to sink our newspaper. But no matter what they do, BirGün will stand firm with the support of its readers and continue to be the voice of the oppressed, laborers, the poor, the youth and women, as it has been for 19 years.” In his petition to the Istanbul Commercial Court of First Instance Judge, Bayraktar claimed that “his personal rights were damaged and he was insulted” due to the news article published on September 17, 2023 with the headline “Whatever the partisans want, they give” (December 22).
