A lawsuit for damages was filed against Medya Koridoru Grant Holder and Editor-in-Chief Canan Kaya on the allegation that Demirören Media Group’s “commercial reputation was damaged and personal rights were violated” (February 1).

At the hearing held on June 7, Demirören Media Group lawyers repeated the lawsuit petition and asked for the case to be accepted.

Kaya’s lawyer, Aktan, demanded the dismissal of the case, stating that the news in question was prepared in line with the law and journalism ethics. Aktan also requested that the outcome of the criminal complaint filed by the plaintiff party be awaited.

The court ruled to send writs to relevant authorities to provide the evidence requested by the parties and to ask the Security Directorate about the fate and whereabouts of the writ previously sent regarding the report on the social and economic status of Kaya. The next hearing will be held on November 1 (June 7).

At the hearing held on November 1, 2022, the court ruled that a writ should be written to the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and the office should be asked whether the appeal against the decision of non-prosecution against Kaya had been concluded or not. The next hearing will be held on February 9, 2023 (November 1).

At the third hearing, the lawyer of Demirören Media Group asked to wait to see whether the objection to the decision of not prosecuting in the criminal complaint he filed regarding “unfair competition” was concluded. Kaya’s lawyer requested the rejection of the case. The court decided to write a new warrant to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and ask whether the decision of not prosecuting has become final. The next hearing is on April 27 (February 9).

At the fourth hearing, he responded to the warrant written to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Istanbul 10th Criminal Court of Peace rejected the objection to the prosecutor’s office’s decision that there was no need for prosecution in Demirören Media Group’s criminal complaint, with the decision being final. Thereupon, the court gave Demirören Media Group two weeks to make a statement on the merits. He postponed the case to July 18. (April 27)

At the last hearing of the case on November 9, the lawyer of the plaintiff Demirören Media Group requested the acceptance of the case. Journalist Kaya’s lawyer requested the rejection of the case. Announcing its decision, the court ruled to reject the case (9 November)
