Durket Süren, a reporter for JinNews, along with 12 others, was taken in custody by police in Lice district of Diyarbakır on grounds of a search warrant against her. She was investigated for her social media posts and released after giving her deposition four days later, with an international travel ban imposed on her.

In the indictment prepared by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office dated 12 February 2019,  Süren faces the charges of “aiding and abetting an organisation knowingly and willingly” and “propagandising for a terrorist organization”  with the allegations that Süren sold the banned issues of the newspapers named Azadiya Welat and Özgür Gündem (February 12).

On February 5, 2020, at the third hearing of the trial, the head of court has stated that they did not receive any digital and criminal investigations of the materials seized by the Diyarbakır Security Directorate and reports requested from MASAK for bank account transactions.

The court decided to wait for the return of the requested reports and adjourned the hearing until 18 May (5 February).

The hearing was postponed to September 28 in result of the measures taken due to coronavirus.

At the hearing held on September 28, 2020, the Presiding Judge indicated that the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) report was ready while the digital material analysis report had not yet been completed. At the hearing held on January 25, 2021, it was seen that the analysis report on Durket Süren’s seized digital materials had not yet been sent by the Diyarbakır Criminal Police Laboratory to be added to the file. The court ruled that the report should be awaited. The next hearing will be held on April 26 (January 25).

At the hearing on April 26, the trial of Durket Süren for “aiding a terrorist organization” and “propagandizing for a terrorist organization” was adjourned to await the digital examination report. The next hearing will be held on September 20 (April 26).

At the hearing held on September 20, 2021, the court board ruled that the digital examination report should be awaited. The next hearing of the trial will be held on December 13 (September 20).

At the hearing held on December 13, 2021, the prosecutor pronounced the opinion as to the accusations and requested that Durket Süren be acquitted of “knowingly and willingly aiding the organization”  and be penalized on charge of “propagandizing for a terrorist organization”. The court gave time to the lawyers to make defense as to the accusations. The next hearing will be held on February 21, 2022 (December 13).

At the hearing held on February 21, 2022, the court ruled that journalist Durket Süren should be acquitted of “knowingly and willingly aiding the organization” and should be sentenced to 1 year, 6 months, 22 days in prison on charge of “propagandizing for a terrorist organization”.
