Süleyman Gençel, the A3 Haber Editor-in-Chief, was taken into custody at his house in İzmir. Taken to the İzmir Security Directorate, Gençel was referred to the prosecutor’s office of cyber crimes at İzmir Courthouse (September 23).
Referred to court, Süleyman Gençel was released on probation (September 24).
Süleyman Gençel, editor-in-chief of A3 Haber, was taken into custody at his home in İzmir and arrested on the same day after the Court of Cassation upheld a 1-year and 2-month prison sentence in a “defamation” case (Article 125 of the Turkish Penal Code) filed by Nükhet Hotar, the rector of Dokuz Eylül University and a former member of parliament for the AKP.
It was stated that Gençel had a previously finalized prison sentence of 2 years and 1 month and was under judicial control at the time.
