On August 19, a series of operations were conducted in the provinces of Diyarbakır, after a trustee was appointed to the Metropolitan Municipality of Diyarbakır along with the municipalities of Van and Mardin on the same day and dismissing elected HDP mayors.
Journalist Ziyan Karahan, who work for the Kurdish service of the Mezopotamya Agency (MA), has also been taken into custody in Diyarbakır as part of these operations. Detained in a raid conducted to her house, Karahan’s reason of detention has not yet become clear.
As reported by the MA, the attorney of Karahan first could not meet her client on the ground that “there were a high number of detained”. Attempting to meet Karahan again, the attorney was then allowed to meet the journalist. Karahan has stated that she was told, “You have been taken into custody due to your press activities.”
