An indictment prepared by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and accepted by the Bakırköy 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance has opened a case against journalist Barış Pehlivan under Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code (publicly disseminating misleading information), seeking 1 year 6 months to 4 years 6 months in prison.
The indictment alleged that during the Halk TV program “Şule Aydın ile Kayda Geçsin” on 15 October 2024, Pehlivan used statements that “undermine public trust in justice and disparage judicial and state institutions through the press.”
The same case also lists journalist Timur Soykan as a defendant. The indictment further noted that a separate proceeding was initiated for the charge of “insulting judicial bodies” against Pehlivan. Proceedings have been initiated.
