Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against Evrim Kepenek, bianet’s women and LGBTI+ news editor.

The prosecutor’s office summoned Kepenek to testify on charges of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information (TPC 217/A)’ and ‘inciting the public to hatred and hostility (TPC 216)’ (November 1).

Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office filed a lawsuit against Kepenek for “disinformation” after he posted about the gendarmerie seizing aid sent to Pazarcık after the February 6 Maraş earthquakes. Kepenek will be tried for ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ according to Article 217/A added to the Turkish Penal Code in October 2022. On September 23, 2024, the journalist, who will appear before the Istanbul 13th Criminal Court of First Instance, said, “The gendarmerie seized the aid tents in Pazarcık, Maraş, and said ‘all aid will be provided through AFAD’. Update: Many aid tents in the area are being seized” (December 28).
