Journalist Furkan Karabay was taken into custody on the morning of November 8 due to his news article and social media posts regarding the arrested and replaced CHP Esenyurt Mayor, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özer. He was arrested the following evening. Furkan Karabay, a reporter for the 10Haber news site, was arrested on charges of “targeting individuals involved in anti-terrorism efforts,” “insulting a public official,” and “deliberately spreading misleading information to the public.” He was arrested based on the first charge. The journalist was released on November 18 with a travel ban following a decision by the Istanbul 17th Criminal Court of First Instance in response to an appeal (November 18).
Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has issued an indictment against gazeteduvar.com.tr reporter Furkan Karabay. The indictment seeks his conviction on charges of insulting public officials (Article 125/3 of the Turkish Penal Code), targeting individuals involved in counterterrorism efforts (Article 6 of the Anti-Terror Law), and publicly disseminating misleading information (Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code).
