Furkan Karabay was detained on charges of “slander” and “insult”. Furkan Karabay, editor of the Gerçek Gündem news site, was taken to the courthouse in Çağlayan, Istanbul, by the police who came to his house in the morning. Karabay had brought up the news about bribery allegations in the judiciary. The journalist was released under judicial control after testifying on the grounds of “slander” and “insult” upon the complaint of Justice Commission Chairman Bekir Altun, who came to the public agenda with the letter sent by Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor İsmail Uçar to the HSYK. Meanwhile, the journalist’s statement was also taken from the files regarding President Erdoğan’s son Bilal Erdoğan and his former lawyer Mustafa Doğan İnal (December 7).

Furkan Karabay, the editor of Gerçek Gündem website, who was charged with “targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism” (TMK 6/1) for reporting on accessible court minutes regarding judicial bribery allegations on December 28, 2023, was released on January 8 (January 8).

Istanbul 51st Criminal Court of First Instance acquitted Furkan Karabay, whom it tried on the charge of “insult” upon the complaint of Istanbul Justice Commission Chairman Bekir Altun, due to his posts regarding bribery allegations in the judiciary (March 18).
