Impunity for attacks on journalists: In May 2019, when the effects of the March 31 local elections were still ongoing, the perpetrators of the attacks on Yeniçağ newspaper columnist Yavuz Selim Demirağ, Akdeniz’de Yeni Yüzyıl newspaper columnist İdris Özyol, Güney Haberci newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ergin Çevik, Egemen newspaper founder Hakan Denizli and journalist-writer Sabahattin Önkibar were identified; however, the ensuing court cases have not yet been finalized. While the trials of the people who attacked Özyol, Çevik, Denizli and Önkibar have begun, a lawsuit has still not been filed against the six people who attacked Yavuz Selim Demirağ (June 9).
