The court of appeals overturned the ruling in the trial over the attempted armed attack on former Cumhuriyet editor-in-chief Can Dündar on May 6, 2016. Assaulter Murat Şahin was previously given 10 months in prison for “unpermitted possession of a firearm” and to pay an administrative fine of 4 thousand 500 Turkish Lira (TRY) for injuring NTV reporter Yağız Şenkal. The appeals court found these sentences inadequate and demanded retrial (January 19).
