In the retrial upon the appeal of NTV reporter Yağız Şenkal, who was shot in his leg in an armed attack launched against journalist Can Dündar in front of the İstanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan on May 6, 2016, the İstanbul 28th Criminal Court of First Instance penalized Murat Şahin, the defendant of the attack, on charges of threatening with an arm, wilful injury and possession of an unregistered firearm. Sentencing Şahin to 3 years, 15 days in prison and 500 Turkish Lira (TRY) as a judicial fine for injuring Şenkal with a firearm, the court reduced the sentence of the defendant to 2 years, 3 months, 15 days “due to good conduct” and deferred the pronouncement of the verdict. That being the case, Şahin will not be imprisoned (July 8).
