Objection to Illegal Eavesdropping

The Kırklareli 2nd High Criminal Court ruled for the release of police officer Abdül Köksal, who was expelled from profession and was put on trial for illegal eavesdropping of 70 people, including journalist Haydar Meriç, whose deceased body was found on the coast of Düzce Akçakoca on June 18, 2011. Expelled from the Ankara Provincial Security Directorate’s Intelligence Bureau, Köksal was sentenced to 9 years, 2 months in prison on charges of “eavesdropping and recording the talks among people”, “recording personal data”, “breach of residence immunity” and “being a member of an armed terrorist organization”. After the verdict on Köksal was overturned by the 3rd Penal Chamber of the İstanbul Regional Court of Justice, the court of appeals, the file was sent back to the local court. Involving the charges of “aggravated breach of residence immunity” and “being a member of an armed terrorist organization”, the retrial would continue on January 27, 2020 (June 10).
