Put on trial at the İstanbul 56th Criminal Court of First Instance, Hüseyin Ateş and Ersin Başkan, who threatened the Hrant Dink Foundation with the emails that they sent in late May, were arrested pending trial. Complainant Fethiye Çetin’s attorney Ümre Deniz Tuna Dink asked defendant Hüseyin Ateş which statements he had seen on the Internet and where he had obtained Çetin’s picture. Defendant Ateş claimed that he had come across the picture on Instagram. Hakan Bakırcıoğlu, one of the attorneys for the complainants, asked whether the investigation into a possible link between the defendants was added to the file or not. The judge answered that the related investigation was still ongoing as a separate file. Defendant Hüseyin Ateş said that while he was in prison, he learned that Hrant Dink Foundation did good deeds, that he was ready to apologize and that he wrote letters of apology to Fethiye Çetin. The court ruled that the defendants should be released pending trial and that the file should be sent to conciliation considering that the case was related to threat. It was ruled that the Forensic Medicine Institution should be asked to examine the mental health of the defendants. The next hearing would be held on February 24, 2021 (June 4).
