The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against journalist Rabia Çetin on charge of “marking counter-terrorism officials as a target” as per the Article 6/1 of the Anti-Terror Law (TMK).
Going to Çetin’s house in İstanbul in the morning hours on May 30, 2022, police officers summoned Çetin to give her statement. Giving her statement at the Kağıthane District Security Directorate, Çetin was interrogated about her social media posts under investigation. Announcing the investigation against herself on her Twitter account, Çetin wrote, “[Justice Minister] Bekir Bozdağ said, ‘There is no one facing an investigation for tweeting.’ ‘He is apparently right.’ For having retweeted a message about the lawsuit filed against Deniz Poyraz’s father, an investigation has been launched [against me] for ‘marking the prosecutor fighting terrorism as a target’. Not for tweeting, but retweeting!” (May 30).
In the first hearing held in İstanbul 23. Heavy Penal Court, Çetin rejected the accusations. Çetin said, “You do not have to agree with everyone that you retweet,” and added that she did not intend to mark anyone a target and that it will be possible to see that there is no insult when the content is studied. The court decided that the file should be sent to the prosecution for the opinion as to the accusations to be prepared and the hearing to be held on September 13 (April 13).
