Journalist Berkant Gültekin, a managing editor of daily BirGün and İbrahim Aydın, the grant holder of the paper, were sentenced to 21 months of imprisonment with the charge of  “insulting the President of the Republic” because of a report criticizing the education system in Turkey in relation to President Erdoğan. Gültekin and Aydın have submitted themselves to Kırklareli Prison for the execution of their prison sentence. 6 days later, they have been released on probation in June 2017.
