Journalist and activist Hakan Tosun, who had been hospitalized in intensive care after being severely beaten while on his way home in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district, passed away on 13 October 2025 following brain death.
On Friday, 10 October, Tosun was found unconscious on the roadside after suffering head injuries from the assault. As he was brought to the hospital unconscious and without any identification or documents, his family could not initially be reached.
Two suspects believed to be involved in the attack were arrested and jailed pending trial on charges of “intentional injury.”
Tosun’s lawyer, Onur Cingil, stated that Halk TV reporter Umut Taştan, who went to the scene to speak with local residents and shopkeepers, was also threatened by relatives of the attackers.
