Journalist Nebiye Arı was detained while following the university students’ protest (We Cannot Find Housing / Shelter Movement) on rising housing prices, amid other necessities fast becoming unaffordable for them. A lawsuit was filed against Arı for “violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations”.
The protest of university students in Ankara on December 12, 2021 had been banned by the governor’s office. Arı, who was detained while following the protest, was released on December 13. The first hearing of the case will be held on November 25 (June 14).
At the hearing held on November 25, 2022, Arı and her lawyer Abdullah İkbal Arslanbaş were present in the courtroom. Arı rejected the offense charged in her defense and said that she was at the protest for news follow-up during the day of the incident. Arı said that she wanted to be exempted from hearings. Arı’s lawyer Arslanbaş stated that he would present their statements directly to the relevant court (Ankara 15th Criminal Court of First Instance). The court ruled that the statement of Arı taken upon instruction should be returned to the Ankara 15th Criminal Court of First Instance (November 25).
