Journalist Mehmet Yalman, owner of Malatya Haber24 website, was detained by the gendarmerie on the allegation of “resisting a public officer” while trying to cover the train accident in Dilek neighborhood of Yeşilyurt district of Malatya.
Claiming that he was beaten by the gendarmerie, Yalman said, “My arms and legs were injured during the beating. They took me into custody after a brawl.” Yalman, who was referred to the prosecutor’s office after his procedures at the gendarmerie, was released after his statement was taken. The journalist told Evren Demirdaş from Sözcü newspaper, “I said, ‘I am a press member,’ and when I put my hand in my pocket and wanted to take out my corporate ID card, about 15 gendarmes swooped on me and beat me. My arms and legs were injured during the beating. They took me into custody after a scuffle” (June 30).
