Journalist Nevşin Mengü announced that she withdrew her interview with Salih Muslim, an official of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), to “prevent misunderstandings” after receiving legal advice suggesting that it could fall under the scope of “praising crime and criminals.” A lawsuit has been filed against the journalist on charges of “terrorist organization propaganda,” with a prison sentence ranging from 1 year and 6 months to 7 years and 6 months being sought (December 25).

Journalist Nevşin Mengü was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison on charges of “terrorist propaganda” for an interview with Salih Müslim, a leader of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), which she later removed from publication. The Istanbul 22nd High Criminal Court issued the ruling by majority vote and suspended the announcement of the verdict. One judge dissented, arguing that Mengü should have been acquitted. Mengü had previously been detained on 14 December 2024 on suspicion of “praising crime and criminals” over the interview and was released under a travel ban.
