The lawsuit was issued against Oğuz Güven, the former editor-in-chief of the online edition for Cumhuriyet daily, for the news about the FEMEN action, in which in the picture showing the activist, Charlie Hebdo cover of the Prophet Muhammad’s drawing appears. The 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance in Istanbul sentenced Güven 6 months of imprisonment on the grounds of “Provoking the Public to Hatred, Hostility or Degrading in one section of the public” in July 2018. The sentence was reduced to 5 months and deferred.
On December 12, 2019, the 3rd Penal Chamber of the İstanbul Regional Court of Justice upheld the prison sentence previously given to Güven for “on the grounds of “Provoking the Public to Hatred, Hostility or Degrading in one section of the public” (12 December).
