The first hearing of the trial where Oktay Candemir is being tried for “insulting the President of the Republic” over a tweet he has shared on September 5, 2019 was held on July 7 at the Van 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance. He faces up from 1 year 2 months to 4 years and 8 months of imprisonment.

Candemir’s lawyer Sevda Aydın presented a petition to be excused from the hearing because a temporary judge is appointed and a verdict won’t be reached. The court accepted the excuse, adjourned the trial until a later date.

At the hearing held on October 8, 2020, the case file was sent to the prosecutor’s office so that the opinion as to the accusations would be prepared. The next hearing will be held on March 4, 2021 (October 8).

At the hearing held on March 4, journalist Oktay Candemir was acquitted of the offense charged on the grounds that the elements of the crime were not constituted (March 4).
