Cemil Uğur and Halil İbrahim Polat, reporters of Evrensel newspaper, were taken into custody while they were reporting a protest. Subsequently, journalists stand trial for alleged “PKK membership and propaganda“.

In its decision on 12 June 2017, the Mersin 2nd High Criminal Court acquitted Halil İbrahim Polat for both charges.

Cemil Uğur, who was tried in the same case, was acquitted on the charge of “membership of a terrorist organization” however, he was convicted for “propagandazing for a terrorist organization”. Uğur is sentenced to 15 months imprisonment. The court decided to suspend the execution of the sentence.
