Pınar Barut, the Editor-in-Chief of Özgür Gazete newspaper in Northern Cyprus, was targeted and threatened after reporting on the allegations of drug trafficking raised by Sedat Peker, who is accused of leading a criminal organization, about Turkish Cypriot businessperson Halil Falyalı. Barut said that she received threatening phone calls urging her to remove the news about Falyalı from the media outlets and putting pressure on the newspaper (June 11).
