The 2nd High Criminal Court of Mardin, with the decision dated 6 October 2017, has released the journalist Mehmet Sıddık Damar, who has been in pre-trial detention for “propagandising for a terrorist organisation” over his social media posts, after having been sentenced to 2 years and 6 months of imprisonment at his first hearing. He had arrested on 18 August and was held in Mardin E Type Closed Prison. The appeal was filed against the decision and journalist was taken into custody on May 1, 2018 and arrested again due to the final prison sentence.
As a result of the application made after the first package of the Judicial Reform was published on the Official Gazette and enacted as law, Damar was released from prison on October 25.
