On May 30, 2016, nine media worker including Cumali Çaygeç, TRT Şeş news director, Sezai Yavaş, TRT Diyarbakır former deputy regional director, Niyazi Özkan, the Ankara correspondent were taken into custody and consequently got arrested allegedly for being a “member in a terrorist organisation [FETÖ]” . They were sent to Ankara Sincan prison.

On December 30, 2018, the court decided the continuation of detention of all TRT correspondents.

On the final hearing held on February 2019, the court decided on the acquittal of one defendant and convicted the rest of 38 for being a member of FETÖ. Cumali Çaygeç was sentenced to 6 years 10 months and 15 days of imprisonment. He was released upon the decision with judicial control measure.
