At the last hearing of the prosecution held on 5 Jul 2019, İstanbul 2. Assize Criminal Court found Cumhuriyet Newspaper columnist and journalist Işıl Özgentürk guilty on “publicly degrading a section of the public on the groundd of religion” and sentenced him to 1 year and 6 months of imprisonment due to his article “New Age Turbaned” published on 3 January 2019. The court did not defer pronouncement of the judgement since Özgentürk this provision was already applied to a prior verdict which had found Özgentürk guilty on the same charge.
